New Tools

  • Lately we have been looking at PDF (Portable Document Format) conversion software, and have found a couple of good freeware programs available for download. Both these programs allow you to convert your reports, invoices and other documents to PDF from any application by simply 'printing' to a PDF printer. They allow you to create high-quality PDFs from within most Windows applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc):

    Interface available in many languages.

    Interface in English only.

  • Lexicool keyword search
    The keyword search in's Dictionary Search has recently been improved. This function, which searches for matches within dictionary titles and keyword fields, allows you to find dictionaries and glossaries that may be more difficult to find using lexicool's set categories. For example, a search on "multitran" will bring up all the dictionaries provided by Multitran. A search for "climbing" will bring up a list of dictionaries and glossaries related to climbing and mountains.
New Dictionaries and Glossaries
Below are some interesting resources that we have recently added to the lexicool directory:

  • IATE (Inter-Agency Terminology Exchange)
    In our September/October 2004 newsletter we announced the amalgamation of all the European Community online terminology databases (Eurodicautom, TIS, Euterpe, etc) into one single inter-institutional terminology base, the IATE. This new data bank containing in excess of 1.4 million terms, is now available online. The release of IATE signals the end of the other EC online databases, which will remain available for the moment, but will no longer be updated.

  • Glossary of Solar Energy Terms (DA-EN-ES-FR-HU-IT-SK-SR)
    An interesting and comprehensive multilingual glossary of technical terms, published by the SPF Institute in Switzerland.

  • The Canadian Cancer Society's Glossary (EN<->FR)
    A resource containing over 1200 technical terms relating to cancer.

  • We have recently added a large number of quality German technical glossaries to the lexicool directory. Examples of these are the Optical Fibre Glossary (DE>EN) and the IMS Technical Dictionary (DE<->EN) containing over 90,000 entries.
